High jumped and hurdled at Cleveland East Tech High School and Ohio State University. Was second in the 1936 Olympic high jump. Won seven national AAU outdoor and one indoor high jump title. Won three NCAA outdoor high jump championships. Tied the outdoor world high jump record. Won two state high school meet high jump titles. Set two Ohio State college outdoor and two Ohio college indoor high jump records. Member of National Track Hall of Fame.
Coached track at Akron Buchtel High School from 1937 through 1942 and from 1947 through 1962. Coached cross country at Buchtel from 1936 through 1941 and from 1946 through 1961. Won the 1961 state high school cross country meet and tied for the 1955 state high school cross country meet. Won six league and five district cross country meets. Official. Was an outstanding athlete at Akron East High School winning two events in the state high school track meet. Meet manager. Official.
Coached track at Germantown in 1942 and West Carrollton from 1946 through 1977. Coached cross country at West Carrollton from 1948 through 1954 and 1957 through 1972. Won three conference and one district track meet. Won three conference cross country meets. Won over 100 dual tri track meets. Meet manager. Official.
Ran sprints at Wintersville High School and Ohio University. Was second in the 1960 Olympic Games 200 meters. Scored in one NCAA 220 and two national AAU 200's. Won five American Conference events.
Coached track at Ohio University from 1961 through 1971 and cross country from 1961 through 1970. Won two Mid American Conference cross country titles and two All-Ohio cross country titles. Coached three individual NCAA track champions and one individual NCAA cross country champion. President NCAA Track Coaches Association in 1971 and 1972 and president of the NCAA cross country coaches in 1968 and 1969.
Vaulted for Mansfield Senior High School and Ohio State University. Set the national high school pole vault record in winning the state high school meet. Set another vault record earlier in the season. Won one Big Ten vault title for Ohio State.
Ran at Cincinnati Courter Tech High School, Brevard Junior College, and at the University of North Carolina. Set two All-Ohio records in winning the 880 and mile in the 1969 state high school track meet. Set one other All-Ohio mile record. In college he won two national junior college track events and one national junior college cross country meet. Won four Atlantic Coast Conference Track events. Was second in the 1973 NCAA indoor mile and third in the NCAA outdoor mile. Won two state high school cross country meet individual titles.
