Ed Barker Award Recipiants

Dale Van Tine (Ed Barker Award - 2000)
Dale Tine

Dale Van Tine has officiated track and field and cross country for more than 20 years_ He has also been a registered basketball and football official for more than 40 years. He has served his local Dayton area as well as throughout the state of Ohio in all capacities of officiating, from meet managing to umpiring. Dale has been a leader in promoting rule changes in Ohio, as well as nationally. He has served many local and statewide officials' associations as an officer and committee leader. Dale has volunteered on a regular basis to serve in many different officiating roles in the MidWest and MidEast Meet of Champions and the OAT&CCC Indoor Elite and Classic Meets. Dale is a retired teacher and administrator of the Dayton Public Schools and has become known throughout the Dayton area in many elementary schools as "Johnny Appleseed" when he visits those schools to present his program on Ohio history.

Lavonna Martin Floreal (2000)
Lavonna Floreal

Lavonna Martin Floreal is arguably the best athlete to ever graduate from Trotwood-Madison HS. During her career, Lavonna recorded the following results at the state meet: 100m hurdles - 1st two years, 3rd once; 300m hurdles - 1st once; 200- 1st twice; 100m dash - 1st once and 2nd once. During her HS career of 1981-84, Lavonna set 17 meet records. In indoor track, she set three national hs records.

Mrs. Floreal graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in education. While a Vol, she was an All-American 14 times. Other accomplishments include winning three individual and two relay NCAA events, setting a Pan American Games record, winning three national TAC 100 hurdles titles, placing second in the world indoor championships, making the finals in the 1988 Olympics, and winning the silver medal in the 1992 Olympics. Mrs. Floreal currently resides and teaches in Palo Alto, California.

Monica O. Gary (2000)
Monica Gary

Monica Gary is one of the leading track coaches in the nation. She has coached high school track for 25 years and cross-country for 17 years. Ms. Gary led the girls' teams at John Adams HS from 1975-1995 and coached at Beaumont HS from 1995 - 1999. Monica is presently the the assistant coach at Purdue University.

Ms. Gary's accomplishments include: 7 district titles, 5 regional titles; 7 state titles; 2 state runners-up; 14 individual state champions; 13 state relay champions; 9 state meet record holders; 12 high school All-Americans. Personal honors include being a staff member at the Atlanta Olympics, assistant coach at the Olympic Sports Festival, the first female recipient of the Ed Barker Award, and many others.

Monica works tirelessly and has been a leading force for the coaches' organization. She has served as a district representative for 15 years, been Ohio coach for the Midwest Meet of Champions, and has spoken many times at our coaches clinic.

Laura Kirkham (2000)
Laura Kirkham

Laura Kirkham graduated from Centerville HS in 1985 after a highly successful track career. In state meets, she won three firsts and a second in the long jump with a best of 20'1"; one first and one second in the 300 hurdles, and three seconds in the 100 hurdles. Laura set ten meet records in her career. She also won a junior national event and several junior olympic national events. Laura was also outstanding in the triple jump and the heptathlon.

While attending Indiana University, Ms. Kirkham scored in the heptathlon in the NCAA and TAC outdoor nationals, scored in the Big Ten Meet 15 times, and competed in the indoor NCAA nationals.

Laura currently resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Bill Whitman (2000)
Bill Whitman

Bill Whitman attended high school at Cleveland East Tech. In 1952 he won three individual state championships winning the high hurdles, the low hurdles (run on a straight-a-way), and the long jump besides running on the winning 880 relay team. Bill also recorded wins in the District Meet, West Tech Relays, East Tech Relays, Mansfield Relays, Salem, and Conference Meet.
